We are in the 21st century, the year 2015 to be more specific, and women are still getting paid less at work then the men. What ever happened to both genders being equal at work, when women are receiving cents for the dollars men earn at work? Where is the justification and fairness in this? What could women possibly begin to do in order for them to be seen as a worker and not a woman? What is the root of gender inequality? Why is it still present in the work and society? How is women’s pay being decided?
From the beginning of mankind, men have been the superior individuals. Men work long and tough hours, they earn the money and provide ends meat for their family society has brought up the mentality that men are the only providers. They are the ones who are never questioned while treated fairly while women are out here struggling to even get their voice heard. This is why many people believe that “men belong in public, women belong at home.” What is the main difference in the unfair treatment that women receive? Is it due to the fact that they are girls on the inside? Or is there a logical explanation for the unequal pay and treatment at work?
Gender inequality in the work force is something that I stand against, one reason for it is because I am a female and when I receive my Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, I would like companies to look at my qualifications, not focus on the name on the resume or application. Another reason why I am strongly against gender inequality at work is because there is no specific reason as to women are treated unfairly. I would understand if women did not want to work at all, but in many cases, that is a certain amount of women, a small proportion compared to all the women in the world.
Even though women perform the same work tasks as men, the male race is being paid more, usually “women earn just 77 cents for every dollar a man earns.” Their work is appreciated more, they are much more valuable which is upsetting because it seems as if women go out and about for a race that should not exist. This issue is very important because gender inequality should not exist, it should have been banned or taken care of as soon as it began. But women are still fighting to be seen as a worker rather than be based as their gender. It is sad because women try so hard to pave the way but nothing seems to change given the circumstance.
Although employers are not allowed to discriminate based on gender, they do it anyways. When companies and employers are being questioned regarding such issues, they beat around the bush. However, they do emphasize certain situations in which the women have to take time off. In some cases, the most important situation in which women tend to need time off is while they are pregnant. During pregnancy, women are most likely working less hours due to the difficulties and type of work, which often times becomes an issue with the company. Although, “some companies do offer new parents paid time off, up to six weeks,” not all companies do, which is often times an issue regarding replacements for their shifts. But would the same thing be given to men during their paternity leave since they are receiving more pay for doing the exact same thing women do?
